We all know what cholesterols are - bad, evil, heart stopping funstuffs that are in the food that we eat.
Here's a little something - the driving theory of "evil cholesterol" is known as The Lipid Hypothesis of Atherogenesis. And along with that I present a little trivia for yon readers: hypothesis means a theory that is unproven and/or has not been validated. In other words, you need to take the hippopotamus out of the thesis to make it really convincing.
Okay that last line was random digression - but funny never the less (ha ha).
So how come it's all the rage in dietary talks and stuff? I call it "The power of intellectual democracy(tm)": Enough people believing in something makes it true.
Take this for example; half a century ago, coronary heart disease were very very rare in India. Later on, the British came in, deemed all that wonderful gee and other miscellaneous evil fatty stuff are unhealthy. The thoughtful Westerners then introduced the Prudent Diet (
look it up yourself) to promote a healthier alternative and guess what happened?
Fifteen times the death rate from heart attacks happened! FIFTEEN! What the hell right?
My theory is that people started to believe that the food were bad for them! All that fidgeting about and stressing on the "bad" food they're eating puts a toll on the BP, you know.
Another example stems also from gee. Plagiarized from some site or other:
In a report by Marc S. Jacobsen in Lancet of September 19, 1987, ghee was found to contain about 12.3% of all sterols in the form of cholesterol oxides, primarily 7-hydroxycholesterol, 25-hydroxy cholesterol, 20-alpha-hydroxy cholesterol, 25-hydroxy cholesterol epoxide, and traces of cholestanetriol. Jacobsen attributed the high morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease of Asian Indians in the London area to consumption of ghee containing these angiotoxic oxysterols.
In other words, Indians in the UK are more prone to believing that they lead an unhealthy life-style and this leads to their early demise.
You see? The more those around you believe in something, the more you yourself will be suckered into this believe. So the next time you want to stress out on that big ass burger you're eating - chill out and just take a big guilt free bite. Besides, if I am what I eat, this must mean I'm cheap, fast and easy ;)
Er... which I'm not.
